SCMS Cochin to host a FDP on Management Consultancy from 26-27th Aug, 2016

July 6, 2016, Cochin: Consultancy Development Unit of SCMS Cochin will host a Faculty Development Programme (FDP) that will sensitize management professionals, in academia and industry to focus on management consultancies and opportunities it offers them. The two day FDP will be held on 26th and 27th August and has been organized under “Building Capacities for Consultancy Development & Knowledge Management with Partner Institution (KMPI)” programme of Consultancy Development Centre (CDC).

Management Consultancy is all about helping organizations improve business. It includes organizational change management assistance, development of skills, capacity building, process studies and analysis, technology implementation and other services. Unfortunately consulting as professional activity in management institutes isn’t explored the way it should be. The FDP will try to address that by emphasizing on the role of management consultancy services and the scope it has to offer.

Helmed by experienced professionals, the FDP will be ideal for faculty members from B-Schools, consulting firms, government departments, consultants and Corporates companies from different industry sectors. Modern, engaging training pedagogy will keep things interesting for participants as they get an overview of consulting and find out more about its process life cycle. The programme will also focus on consultant-client relationships besides ethics and professionalism in consulting.

Marketing of consulting services, proposal preparation and costing of consulting services, securing, planning and delivery of consultant assignment will be some of the other topics covered during the programme. B School representatives will benefit from the session based around consultancy in Management Institutes covering skill gaps. There will also be a segment on “Consultancy as a Professional activity of faculty members in Management Institutions” to look forward to.

Who should attend the FDP? The FDP is designed for faculty members from B-Schools, Department of Management Studies, Consulting firms, Government Departments, Consultants and Corporates / Industries.

Thus the FDP has something for all participants with their own requirements and focus. They will not only go home richer in knowledge and experience but with participation certificates from CDC, New Delhi and the institute too.

SCMS-COCHIN, like a good training ground for management students  believes in all-round development. Working toward that end, it has been conducting personality development programs (PDPs) for students.

The person behind these PDPs, M.A.S. Menon, has been providing corporate training and life-skill coaching to SCMS students for several years. Mr. Menon enjoys grooming students at SCMS-Cochin, who, he says, are disciplined. “Intellectually, they seem to be on a higher level than those at the other B-schools in Kerala,” he says.

He adds SCMS-COCHIN students are good with words and confident enough to put across their ideas. “Whenever I interact with them, they come out openly with their problems and try to find solutions. Most of them are very clear in their head about their ambitions and are working toward achieving their goals,” he says.  In his PDP, Mr. Menon works on students’ soft skills. His training modules are helpful in enhancing the personalities of the students. Elaborating on the different courses he handles, Mr. Menon cites the Integrated Value Management Program. These classes are held for an hour or two whereas the PDP takes place over a minimum of two days.

Mr. Menon says his training module, ASHA, (an acronym for Attitude, Synergy, Harmony and Achievement) is covered over a period of two days. He says over the years, a lot of people he has trained have come back to him saying how they’ve benefited from the PDP. These programs have come in handy when they’ve joined the corporate world.

Mr. Menon says he has seen the SCMS-Cochin grow over the years and is proud of the association as it is one of the best B-Schools in the state.

SCMS-Cochin Carving Out Complete Person Through Integrated Managerial Learning Programme

SCMS Cochin has always been guided by the principal that success of business depends on the maturity of the people who run and mange it. A businessman has to deal with many situations during day to day working, and those who have developed and mastered soft skills and learned to go beyond text books learning, manage to stand apart from the crowd and survive in the fierce word of business.

Students join SCMS from all walks of life. All of them are good in academics but to outshine and to be ready for industry, they need to hone their skills in every sphere of life. This can be best achieve by experiential learning, and participating in activities that help one improve social skills, knowledge and understanding of human behavior. “There is much more learning in these types of activities than from a class room lecture,” says Dr. G.P.C. Nayar, Chairman SCMS Cochin.

“It all started with group activities under students counsel, and it proved an instant hit both with the students and top management,” recollects Dr. Ms. Filomina P. George, Academic Administrator and Professor in the department of finance. She has been the force behind formulation and development of this concept which saw students and faculty also pitching in to devise an appropriate programme, which finally culminated into Integrated Managerial Learning Programme (IMLP). “To sustain students interest, it is ensured  that the activities are in the nature of infotainment and give one ample opportunity to express and experiment—thereby helping one to realise one’s true potential”, adds Dr. Filomina.

IMLP was officially launched on July 1, 2004 for 12th batch of PGDM students of SCMS Cochin. Students’ conveners and core committee of the faculty constitute IMLP Core Committee.

The IMLP envisages six days weekly schedule. Day one is devoted to Quiz Club which organizes quiz series with special focus on economy, corporate world and finance sector. The Theatre on day one is designed to develop creativity, initiative, organizing and communication skills through dramatics.

Day 2 & 4 is a day for Vertical House. Participating teams study evolution, structure and characteristics of the selected industry. Come 3rd day and students brace themselves for The Big Fight—a debate or Panel discussion.

Day 5 is devoted to Institute-Industry-Interaction through Seminar, Paper presentations workshops, and industrial visits. “We look forward to this interaction as we get a reality check of present industrial scenario”, say Radha Krishna, first year student of PGDM.

Day 6 is earmarked for extra-curricular activities which include talent time, social projects, language lab and sports. Language lab is compulsory for those who need to improve English language skills. These days we hear a lot about social responsibility of industry, but this is not new for SCMC Cochin as each student needs to identify with one project of social significance and endorse his or her contribution to the society. Sports occupies an important position, and voluntary groups of students organize teams of various sports and games.

No wonder, SCMC Cochin students rank at the top when industry suitability is assessed.
